HC Deb 30 July 1953 vol 518 c218W
Mr. Neave

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will cause further inquiries to be made into the case of Mr. K. Hazell, of the Station Mews Garage, Stert Street, Abingdon, which was referred to his Department recently by the clerk to the Abingdon Borough Council; and whether, in view of the circumstances of this case, he will reconsider his refusal to agree to any compensation or ex gratia payment being made to Mr. Hazell for his financial loss occasioned by the reconstruction of Stert Street, in consequence of which it was impossible for vehicles to approach his garage.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

I have considered this case again but regret that I cannot undertake to compensate, or makeex gratia payments to, persons whose businesses are interfered with by necessary road works. Steps are taken to reduce such interference as far as possible, but on this occasion it was not practicable to provide a temporary alternative access.
