HC Deb 30 July 1953 vol 518 c191W
70. Mr. McKibbin

asked the Secretary to the Treasury why Ulster motorists going south and Eire motorists coming north on new triptyques, outside the prescribed hours, will have to pay increased charges from 31st July amounting to 8s. per hour with a minimum of 24s. from Monday till Saturday and 9s. per hour on Sundays and Bank Holidays with a minimum of 27s., where the equivalent charge by the Eire Customs is only 2s. per hour for a similar service; and why extra charges are necessary when Customs officials are on duty in the Northern Ireland Customs posts up to 9 p.m.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

A free service is provided between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays, but a charge is levied to help to cover the cost of attendance of Customs officers outside these hours. This charge, which relates only to first and last crossings on a triptyque, is to be increased to help to cover additional costs. It has now been decided that the charge shall be 7s. 6d. for each private vehicle dealt with between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Sundays and public holidays. The system employed by the Republic of Ireland is different and no useful comparison can be made.
