Mr. Awberyasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he is aware of the urgency of the needs for improvements in the medical services of the Colony of Singapore; and what specific measures have now been taken to implement the recommendations of the Vickers Plan of 1947 and to satisfy these needs.
§ Mr. LytteltonYes. Substantial funds have been provided annually since 1950 for items included in the modified medical plan finally recommended by a Select Committee in September, 1948. Principal among them have been the Nurses' Home, the Medical Officers' Quarters, the new Out-Patient Division and the improvement of existing buildings and facilities at the General Hospital; the Leper Settlement; the Base Medical Store and Factory; extensions and improvements at the maternity hospital; and child welfare and maternity centres in166W the rural areas. The estimated expenditure under the plan this year is nearly $5 million.
