HC Deb 29 July 1953 vol 518 c164W
92. Mr. Awbery

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps are being taken to provide medical service and assistance to the Sakai tribes in the jungles of Malaya.

Mr. Lyttelton

Those of the Sakai who have settled within reach of the travelling dispensaries get the normal medical services provided for rural areas. Where jungle forts have been established, there is a medical dresser on the establishment and arrangements are also being made for regular visits by doctors travelling by helicopter.

In general, however, the Department of Aborigines is responsible for the welfare of the Sakai and makes arrangements with the medical and health authorities, as occasion arises, to deal with epidemics or, where possible, individual cases of ill-health.
