HC Deb 29 July 1953 vol 518 c163W
104. Mr. Braine

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, in view of frequent instances of heroism and devotion to duty displayed by Kikuyu tribesmen, he is satisfied that adequate and immediate recognition is being given to the individuals concerned.

Mr. Lyttelton

Kikuyu tribesmen are eligible for the various gallantry awards—the George Cross, George Medal, the various classes of the Order of the British Empire and the Queen's Commendation for brave conduct.

The British Empire Medal was awarded in March to Chief Muhoya Kagumba and Chief Eliud Mugo in recognition of their leadership and fight against the Mau Mau, and other awards are under consideration.

The Governor is fully alive to the desirability of submitting such recommendations as quickly as possible after the event.
