HC Deb 29 July 1953 vol 518 c162W
98. Mr. Paget

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will take steps to provide that citizens of Kenya, charged under the Emergency Regulations, are provided with copies of the statements of prosecution, witnesses and other evidence to be adduced against them not less than 48 hours before their trial.

Mr. Lyttelton

Such arrangements are being made for persons so charged before the Supreme Court

99. Mr. Paget

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will take steps to provide that citizens of Kenya charged under the Emergency Regulations are provided with an opportunity to obtain legal advice prior to their trial and to be legally represented at their trial.

Mr. Lyttelton

Persons charged under the Emergency Regulations do have an opportunity to obtain legal advice and to be legally represented at their trial. In cases in which the accused is charged with a capital offence the Government assigns and pays for counsel to represent him.
