HC Deb 23 July 1953 vol 518 c65W
84. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why it was decided that the patrol stewards employed by the Metropolitan Police to supervise schoolchildren crossing roads should lose three days' pay during the recent Coronation period; and, in view of the special circumstances and the fact that many depend on the pay to augment their low income, whether he will arrange that they shall be paid for that period.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

These patrols accept appointment on the basis that they are paid for duty done, and are not to expect pay in respect of days when the schools are closed. The days on which schools were closed during Coronation week varied, but I have thought it right to authorise the grant to patrols of one day's pay in respect of Coronation day itself.
