HC Deb 22 July 1953 vol 518 c50W
Dr. King

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many free pardons have been claimed since June, 1950, to the latest available date: and how many granted.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

The information asked for in the first part of the Question could not be made available without the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of time and labour. Thirty-one free pardons have been granted since June, 1950, in respect of convictions in England and Wales. In addition, there are some 300 cases in which, as a result of the decisions of the High Court in Blenkin v. Bell and Woolley v. Moore, I have decided to recommend the grant of a free pardon to persons convicted of exceeding the speed limit for licensed goods vehicles when they were not carrying goods.
