§ Mr. Haleasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the estimated number of persons in the British Colonial Territories disabled by yaws; what is the estimated cost of treatment per head; how many persons are in receipt of treatment; and what steps are to be taken to make more treatment available.
§ Mr. LytteltonThese statistics are not at my disposal, but I am sending the hon. Member a copy of a report which contains much information about the incidence and treatment of yaws in a number of Colonial Territories. Costs vary widely according to methods and place of treatment and no simple estimate can be given. The disease is receiving full attention in colonial health programmes, an example being a two-year control campaign shortly to be started in Nigeria in collaboration with W.H.O. and U.N.I.C.E.F.
