Mr. Strang

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what was the total level of Government expenditure on research into wool production in 1982; and what are the corresponding estimates for 1983 and 1984.

Mr. Jopling

Government expenditure on research into wool production was £75,220 in 1981–82, £79,995 in 1982–83 and is estimated at £76,000 for 1983–84.

Mr. Strang

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what was the estimated gross return to farmers from their 1982 wool clip.

Mr. MacGregor

Farmers received £33,882,410 from the British Wool Marketing Board for the 1982 clip.
