HC Deb 21 July 1953 vol 46 c187W
Mr. Banks

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will set out the numbers of probation officers currently employed in the age ranges (a) up to 25 years, (b) 25 to 35 years, (c) 35 to 45 years and (d) over 45 years, respectively.

Mr. Mellor

This information is not available centrally or required for Home Office purposes. If my hon. Friend has some particular point of interest in mind, perhaps he would care to write to me.

Mr. Banks

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will set out the numbers of recruits to the probation service for each of the last five years, together with an indication of the age ranges of those accepted.

Mr. Mellor

The number of probation officers recruited by probation committees in each of the last five years was as follows:

Numbers
1978 457
1979 467
1980 351
1981 328
1982 347

The lower numbers since 1980 reflect a fall in the wastage rate of serving officers. The information provided by the probation committees does not include age ranges.
