§ 21. Mr. Hector Hughesasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he is aware that the draft law recently approved by the German Government in Bonn and designed to give compensation to victims in Germany of Nazi persecution, discriminates between persons persecuted by reason of nationality on the one hand and persons persecuted for their political convictions, race, faith or ideology, on the other hand; that this Bill has advanced several stages on its way to the German Statute Book; and what representations or other steps Her Majesty's Government are making to the German Government to remove this particular discrimination so as to rectify this anomaly before the draft law is passed.
§ Major Beamishasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he can now say what steps are being taken by the Federal German Republic to give compensation to non-German victims in Germany of Nazi persecution.
§ Mr. NuttingI am aware that the draft law makes a distinction between the two categories of victims mentioned by the hon. and learned Member. It does, however, fulfil the obligations assumed by the Federal Government under the Bonn Conventions. As regards action by Her Majesty's Government, I have at present nothing to add to the answer I gave on 7th July to my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for Lewes.
