HC Deb 14 July 1953 vol 517 cc157-8W
Mr. Swingler

asked the Minister of Education if she is aware of the shortage of school places at Cross Heath and the urgent need for more secondary school places at Chesterton, in the excepted district of Newcastle-under-Lyme; and if she will reconsider the school-building programme for Staffordshire for 1953–54, with a view to including some projects for this district.

Miss Horsbrugh

Some relief will come to the Cross Heath area next term when part of the new Hempstall's Farm County Primary School comes into use. As I told the hon. Member on 23rd October last, the local education authority and my Department are watching the secondary school requirements in Newcastle-under-Lyme carefully. I do not think it necessary or practicable to add a project there to the 1953–54 building programme but the position is being reviewed in relation to the 1954–55 programme.
