HC Deb 09 July 1953 vol 517 cc100-1W
7. Mr. Anthony Greenwood

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he is aware that dead fish estimated to total 5,500 were found piled against the lock gates at Netham. Bristol on 29th June; and what steps he is taking to ensure that there is no recurrence of this destruction.

Sir T. Dugdale

Yes. I am informed by the Bristol Avon River Board that the loss was due to high water temperature at a time when the freshwater flow of the river was low and the effluent discharged into tidal waters was carried far upstream on account of spring tides. This was an abnormal combination of circumstances that is most unlikely to recur. The risk could be completely averted only by the discharge of the effluent away from the estuary of the Avon at very great capital cost.
