HC Deb 08 July 1953 vol 517 cc88-9W
57. Mr. Arbuthnot

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General how much capital expenditure has been permitted to the British Broadcasting Corporation in each of the years since the war; how much is forecast for the present financial year as a result of last week's Government announcement; and what percentage has been spent in each year on the British Broadcasting Corporation's television service.

Mr. Gammans

In the present financial year, 1953–54, total capital expenditure, including initial expenditure on the developments announced last week, is expected as a rough forecast, to be of the order of £2 million, but much depends upon how quickly the Corporation can proceed with the work.

The following table shows the total capital expenditure of the B.B.C. excluding the external services from 1948–49 to 1952–53 together with the percentage thereof devoted to television.

Capital expenditure Television percentage
£'000
1948–49 664 35
1949–50 1,209 67
1950–51 1,143 66
1951–52 1,435 71
1952–53 1,292 72
