HC Deb 28 January 1953 vol 510 c118W
86. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps have been taken in Cyprus to regulate the employment of domestic servants under 18 years of age and to regulate the adoption or quasi-adoption of children for the purpose of exploiting their labour.

Mr. Lyttelton

The law, as amended in November, requires employers to register all young domestic servants (females under 18 and males under 16) including particulars of their conditions of service. These have to be approved by the Commissioner of Labour, who has powers of inspection to ensure that the conditions are being observed.

This law provides adequate safeguards against the misuse of adoption for the purpose suggested.
