HC Deb 26 January 1953 vol 510 cc80-1W
100. Mr. Bence

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer by what amount bank credit has contracted since October, 1951, in Scotland, England and Wales respectively.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

The London Clearing Banks do not distinguish between their operations in England and in Wales. Their published figures for these two countries together show that between October, 1951, and November, 1952, advances fell by £154 million, or about 8 per cent. Similar figures for the operation of the Scottish Banks are not published, but I have no reason to suppose that the degree of contraction of bank credit is appreciably different in Scotland.
