HC Deb 20 January 1953 vol 510 cc20-1W
99. Sir R. Acland

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will give particulars of the special tariff problems affecting the Colonies which, according to the communiqué issued at the end of the Commonwealth Economic Conference, are to be studied sympathetically by Commonwealth Governments.

Mr. Lyftelton

The reference in the communiqué is to cases involving the entry of colonial products into independent Commonwealth countries at preferential rates of duty, including those referred to in the Questions put to me by my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for Dumfries (Mr. N. Macpherson) on 3rd December and to my right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade by my hon. Friend the Member for Croydon, East (Sir H. Williams) on 5th December.

Where this involves an approach to the Contracting Parties to the G.A.T.T., it will be for the Commonwealth country concerned to decide whether to make that approach.
