§ 102. Mr. Morleyasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what protests he has made to the Government of the United States against the screening of the crews of British ships sailing from Southampton to New York.
§ Mr. Selwyn LloydA note calling attention to the harmful effects which certain provisions of the new United States Immigration and Nationality Act would have for British shipping and seamen was addressed by H.M. Chargé d'Affaires at Washington to the State Department on 24th December. This Note, which reinforced representations already made by H.M. Embassy, pointed out that the provisions of the Act were contrary to the generally accepted practice of maritime countries and were liable to deprive seamen of shore leave when in United States ports and to cause interference with the turn-round of ships. No reply has yet been received.
