Mr. Bossom

asked the Minister of Agriculture what steps are being taken to prevent the repetition this year of the deficit on the land drainage and water supply operations of the county agricultural executive committees.

The deficit for the financial year, 1951–52 was only £23,093, which was 1½ per cent. of turnover, excluding £22,139 received from sales of surplus machinery and spares. Results so far this year indicate that there should be no deficit. The main new feature has been the adoption of a standard costing procedure which helps in securing
