HC Deb 19 February 1953 vol 511 cc145-6W
11. Mr. McInnes

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is aware of the shortage of shillings in Glasgow owing to the gas and electricity boards installing one shilling prepayment meters; that street vendors are selling one-shilling pieces for 15 pence; and if he will instruct the Mint to arrange for the issue of more shillings in Glasgow in order to put an end to this undesirable practice.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

Coins are issued by and at the request of the head offices of the banks whose branches are in the areas concerned. The head office of the Glasgow bank asked on 13th February for a further supply of shillings to be sent direct to its Glasgow branch, and arrangements to do this were at once made.
