asked the Minister of Agriculture what steps he is taking to ensure the availability of large quantities of gypsum for use on farmland which has been inundated by the recent floods; and whether he will consider making gypsum available free of charge for all farmland which has so suffered.

The principal suppliers have assured me that adequate supplies of gypsum are available. In conjunction with my right hon. Friend, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, I am considering the desirability and practicability of giving financial assistance to farmers in appropriate cases towards the purchase of gypsum
