asked the Secretary of State for Scotland to what extent his Department is assisting financially with road and pier and harbour and other works to mitigate the hardship caused by the present heavy unemployment in the Western Isles.

Assistance to the extent of over £840,000 is being given by my right hon. Friend's Department and the Development Commission towards works in progress in the Western Isles estimated to cost well over £1 million. Approval has also been given to further schemes costing £602,000 for which grants totalling £477,000 have been offered.
