§ 65. Mr. Robson Brownasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will, when preparing his Budget, consider the repayment of post-war credits to all those whose homes have been affected by the recent floods.
§ Mr. R. A. ButlerMuch as I sympathise I do not think that payment of post-war credits would be a suitable way of helping the victims of the recent floods.
§ 68. Mr. McAddenasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether his attention has been drawn to the difficulties of traders in the flooded areas who have lost stocks on which Purchase Tax or duty has been paid; and what steps he proposes to enable them to obtain stock replacements without further payment of tax or duty.
§ Mr. R. A. ButlerI am aware of the difficulties, but the question of relief from Purchase Tax and duty for traders' stocks in the flooded areas forms part of the general problem arising out of the floods which, as my right hon. and learned Friend the Home Secretary has pointed out, involves longer-term factors requiring careful consideration.
