HL Deb 17 February 1953 vol 180 c506WA
LORD BLACKFORD

asked Her Majesty's Government whether, in view of the abolition of trams and the shortage of police, the use of police-controlled traffic lights on the Embankment at Waterloo Bridge ought to cease.

LORD LLOYD

Despite the abolition of trams, the volume of traffic from Savoy Street and Savoy Place makes seine form of control necessary at this point, and police-controlled lights enable this to be provided with the minimum expenditure of manpower. The question of installing permanent automatic signals is under consideration, but a decision may be held up until plans for the reconstruction of this portion of the Victoria Embankment have been settled.

House adjourned at three minutes past six o'clock.
