HC Deb 09 February 1953 vol 511 cc1-2W
26. Mr. Vane

asked the Minister of Materials on what basis dollars are allocated for the import of timber; and whether he will give an assurance that no further imports of oak will be made from the United States of America when there are ample supplies in other European countries, if not in this country.

Mr. H. Strauss

I have been asked to reply. Dollar hardwoods may be used only for essential purposes and users must get a consumption licence from the appropriate Department. Import licences are only granted to replace the wood so used. Consumption is only licensed where it appears from the available evidence that no suitable timber can be obtained outside the dollar area.
