HC Deb 09 February 1953 vol 511 c4W
Miss Ward

asked the Minister of Transport which recommendations of the Central Transport Users Committee have been accepted and put into operation by the British Transport Commission, and which have been rejected.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The Central Transport Consultative Committee for Great Britain have made 13 substantive recommendations to the Commission which have been accepted. These were upon the following matters

  1. (1) Car Parking facilities at Railway Stations.
  2. (2) Mechanical Handling of Goods.
  3. (3) Railway Transits in Eastern England.
  4. (4) Railway Services between Clapham, Olympia and Willesden.
  5. (5) Travelling Facilities in North-East London.
  6. (6) Increase in Road Haulage Charges.
  7. (7) Clyde Steamer Services.
  8. (8) Baths for Women Travellers at Railway Hotels.
  9. (9) Transport of Schoolchildren between Hope Valley and New Mills.
  10. (10) Withdrawal of Passenger Train Service from Cheddington-Aylesbury Branch.
  11. (11) Railway Services to and from Hastings.
  12. (12) Information supplied to Consultative Committees for considering withdrawal of unremunerative services on branch lines.
  13. (13) Withdrawal of Passenger Train Services -Indication in time-tables of substituted services.

Recommendations of the Committee upon traders' season tickets and bulk travel facilities were found by the Commission to be unacceptable; the Committee subsequently decided not to press for the re-introduction of bulk travel facilities. The recommendation in connection with the increase in charges for meals in railway restaurant cars, buffets, etc., that there should be more buffet and cafeteria cars is endorsed by the Commission and is being carried out. But the Commission were unable to agree that they would be justified in compelling traders and members of the travelling public who do not use restaurant car facilities to contribute to their cost.
