HC Deb 04 February 1953 vol 510 cc201-2W
57. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the present position of affairs in the Egba authority of Nigeria in respect of the relationship between the people and the Alake of Abeokuta; and whether the Nigerian Women's Union in that area, and other areas, is now operating freely without collision with the law.

Mr. Lyttelton

Relations between the people in the Egba authority of Nigeria and the Alake of Abeokuta remain generally cordial. A few persons have been prosecuted for continuing their refusal to pay the water rate imposed by the Native Authority, but have not appealed against conviction.

Agitation by the Nigerian Women's Union on this question has now died down, and I know of no further incidents involving collision with the law.
