Mr. Oliver

asked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance the number of persons in receipt of National Assistance to the latest date available, in each of the categories of old age pensioners, and of persons in receipt of sickness benefit, unemployment benefit, widows' pensions and Industrial Injuries or disablement benefit, respectively.

On 29th September, 1953, the numbers of regular weekly grants of National Assistance that were being paid to persons receiving the following kinds of pensions or benefits were:

Non-contributory Pension 160,300
Retirement Pension 912,300
Sickness Benefit 139,100
Industrial Injury or Disablement Benefit 1,300
Unemployment Benefit 40,500
Widows' Pensions 98,700
Total 1,352,200

Some of the grants covered the needs of a household containing more than one recipient of a pension or benefit.
