HC Deb 17 December 1953 vol 522 c95W
Mr. K. Robinson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how far the revised arrangements for the insurance of Government-owned commodities detailed in Annex 17 of the Thirteenth Report of the Select Committee on Estimates, Session 1948–49, are still operative; and if he will state the total of premiums paid and claims received and outstanding from 1st July, 1948, to the latest convenient date.

Mr. R. A. Butler

These general arrangements, including the arrangement concerning profits on marine insurance which is described in the Note to Table 1 of that Annex, are still in operation at the present time. The relevant total figures for marine insurance, for the period from 1st January, 1948, to 31st August, 1953, are as follows:

£
Gross premium payments 9,996,193
Deduct—
Refund of premium payments 2,138,778
Net premium payments after refund 7,857,415
Claims paid and outstanding 5,767,473

I regret that it has been necessary to relate these figures to a period beginning six months earlier than that suggested by the hon. Member. As regards fire insurance, in the period from 1st July, 1948, to 30th September, 1953, premium payments totalled £2,505,565, and claims paid or outstanding totalled £2,005,526.
