HC Deb 17 December 1953 vol 522 c115W
Mr. Dodds

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation if he will make a statement indicating when work is to recommence on completing the Dartford-Purfleet tunnel; when it is estimated it will be completed; and when the construction work will be sufficiently far advanced to enable the shields to be removed and transferred to Glasgow for use in constructing the Whiteinch-Linthouse tunnel.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

As indicated in my statement to the House on the 8th December, it is proposed to re-start work on the Dartford-Purfleet Tunnel in 1955–56. If all four shields are used on this tunnel, the work should be completed in about 5 or 6 years, and the shields will remain in use for about 3½ years after re-starting work. The question whether the shields will be used for the Whiteinch-Linthouse Tunnel, or whether new shields will be required will be considered in relation to the plans for that tunnel.
