§ Mr. Awberyasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he is aware of the feeling of dissatisfaction in several of our Colonies owing to the remoteness of control in Whitehall and the difficulties of direct access to the Colonial Office, and that these have been a contributing factor to many of ourdifficulties;and if he will set up a committee to consider what changes are necessary in our methods of colonial government which will give to the Colonies the feeling that they are a real and integral part of the British Commonwealth.
§ Mr. LytteltonOf the complaints coming to my notice, more have been directed against the extent and closeness of alleged Whitehall control than against its remoteness. Also opportunities for responsible people in the Colonial Territories to have direct contact with the Colonial Office are far greater now than ever before. I therefore cannot accept either reason for the suggested appointment of a committee.
