HC Deb 16 December 1953 vol 522 cc60-1W
94. Lieut.-Colonel Schofield

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General what number of claims his Department receives each year for the non-delivery of unregistered postal packets with contents of small value such as cigarettes and unregistered letters which obviously contain money.

Mr. Gammans

As my hon. and gallant Friend will be aware, no compensation is payable in respect of unregistered letters and packets, so that detailed particulars are not available. Out of approximately 8,700 million of these items posted annually, about 55,000 claims are received in respect of letters and packets with contents valued at 5s. or more which are said to be missing.
