HC Deb 16 December 1953 vol 522 c52W
33. Mr. G. Longden

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what proportion of the new villages in the Federation of Malaya have held democratic elections; what was the percentage poll; and when it is expected to be able to hold elections at higher levels.

Mr. Lyttelton

Elections have been held in over 100 of the 540 new villages and many more are planned for 1954. In these and similar local elections nearly 75 per cent. of those eligible have voted.

Elections have also been held in all three municipalities and for 10 town councils. It is hoped to hold State elections in Johore and the Settlement of Penang, in 1954, and in the other States and Malacca, in 1955.
