HC Deb 15 December 1953 vol 522 cc47-8W
Mr. P. Wells

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why the original estimate of £1,467, for the adaptation of the control centre, Sheerness, submitted by the Sheerness Urban District Council, was increased to £4,500 by his Department.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

The district council are adapting and strengthening the existing control centre on behalf of the county council who will meet the cost with the help of Exchequer grant at the rate of 75 per cent. The district council's original plans were incomplete, and, among other items, made no provision for ventilating plant. The minimum necessary modifications suggested by the county council and by my technical advisers have increased the estimated cost of the work.
