HC Deb 10 December 1953 vol 521 c279W
121. Mr. Shinwell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how far, in the negotiations in connection with the proposed association between the United Kingdom and the European Defence Community, discussion has taken place on the period of compulsory military ser vice for the forces comprised in the European Defence Community; and if he will give an assurance that he will press for a uniform period of service.

Mr. Nutting

The European Defence Community Treaty provides for a uniform period of service for European Defence Community forces and for the way in which agreement is to be reached among the six countries on what this period should be. The matter has not been raised in the discussions about British association with the European Defence Community, and the second part of the Question does not arise.
