HC Deb 09 December 1953 vol 521 c243W
109. Mr. Callaghan

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General how many ships of British flag use amplitude modulation radio services, as compared with the 300 ships of United States flag now using frequency modulation services.

Mr. Gammans

About 500 British vessels are licensed to carry very high frequency amplitude modulated equipment. I understand that the corresponding figure for United States vessels of all types carrying frequency modulated equipment is in the region of 2,200.

111. Mr. Ness Edwards

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General what report the Television Advisory Committee has made on the relative merits of frequency modulation and amplitude modulation (very high frequency); and if he will publish this report before the Postmaster-General makes a decision on the type of modulation to be adopted.

Mr. Gammans

My noble Friend expects the Television Advisory Committee to report on this matter within the next week or so, and he will then consider the question of publication.
