HC Deb 09 December 1953 vol 521 c242W
102. Mr. Hollis

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General whether he can make a statement on the technical possibilities and difficulties in the introduction of subscription television.

Mr. Gammans

In subscription television, the station broadcasts its programmes in a scrambled form and a viewer wanting to see a programme puts a coin or special token into a decoding apparatus connected to his set. There are no great technical problems in providing such a service but I can see no scope for it at present in this country.
