HC Deb 03 December 1953 vol 521 c151W
46. Mr. Hurd

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is aware of the general desire that Summer Time should, in future years, be continued until the third Sunday in October, to which the farming community are agreeable; and if he will now announce the Government's decision.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

The special procedure in the Summer Time Act, 1947, can only be used to alter the statutory dates for Summer Time for one year at a time. Her Majesty's Government, after giving very careful consideration to this matter, have come to the conclusion that there are no special reasons which would justify the use of this exceptional procedure to alter the statutory period in 1954. Summer Time next year will therefore operate from 11th April until 2nd October.
