HC Deb 03 December 1953 vol 521 cc148-9W
Mr. Hastings

asked the Minister of Agriculture how many live horses were imported from Ireland for any purpose during the last year for which information is available: and also during each of the two previous years.

Sir T. Dugdale

According to returns furnished under the Horses (Sea Transport) Order, 1952, approximately 6,200 live horses from the Irish Republic and 3,000 from Northern Ireland have been imported into Great Britain in the 10 months up to 30th October this year. There are no corresponding figures for previous years. Such information as is available about the imports of horses from Ireland in previous years is given in Table II on p. 53 of the Report of the Committee of Inquiry into the Slaughter of Horses (Cmd. 8925).
