§ 110. Major Anstruther-Grayasked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury how many individuals besides retired officers of the Armed Forces are now receiving retired pay or pensions the whole of which is subject to a cut of 9½ per cent. below the 1919 rate: and to what categories they belong.
§ Mr. Boyd-CarpenterMy only information on this subject relates to the Civil Service. Civil Service pensions depend on salary, and the cuts which corresponded to those to which my hon. and gallant Friend refers arose directly from reductions in pay. Pay depended on a complex bonus system, and both it and pensions fell on the relevant period, with the fall in the cost of living. Taking account of those directly affected in this way, as well as of those affected by the so called "super cut" of 1921, I estimate that there are between 750 and 1,000 retired civil servants whose pensions are reduced by 9½ per cent. or more.
