56. Mr. J. T. Hallasked the Minister of Health if he is aware that constant appeals are being made for funds on behalf of the National Fund for Poliomyelitis Research; what steps are being taken to combat this disease; and whether he will consider increasing Government assistance to facilitate the work of finding a cure for the disease.
§ Miss Hornsby-SmithMy right hon. Friend is aware of these appeals, and welcomes help which the fund may be able to give to supplement research in this field. Treatment is provided within the National Health Service mainly by the hospitals, in an increasing number of which special units are being provided. My right hon. Friend understands that an extensive programme of research is being sponsored by the Medical Research Council and is not restricted by lack of funds.
