HC Deb 23 April 1953 vol 514 c73W
Mr. Hamilton

asked the Minister of Labour the total insured population of Scotland for each year from 1946–52, inclusive.

Sir W. Monckton

The total insured population includes not only employees but also self-employed persons and persons not gainfully occupied. It is assumed that the Question concerns insured employees, and the estimated total numbers of these in Scotland in each of the years 1948 to 1952 were as follows:

End-June 1948 2,090,000
End-May 1949 2,086,000
1950 2,105,000
1951 2,105,000
1952 2,102,000

The figures are based on counts of insurance cards held under the National Insurance Scheme, which came into operation in 1948. Comparable figures are not available for 1946 and 1947.
