HL Deb 23 April 1953 vol 181 c1219WA
LORD STRABOLGI

asked Her Majesty's Government what is the present average cost of maintaining a woman prisoner in Her Majesty's Prisons, including overheads.

THE JOINT PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT (LORD LLOYD)

The average cost, including overheads but excluding the cost of new buildings, of maintaining a prisoner in English prisons used only for women was £331 in the financial year 1951–52, the latest year for which this information is available. It is not possible on the basis of material presently available to give any figure that would include the women prisoners in prisons used to accommodate both men and women.
