Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many students are studying at Hong Kong University from Brunei, North Borneo and Sarawak, respectively; how many applications have been made from these territories; and how many have been refused.

Mr. Lyttelton

pursuant to his reply [OFFICIAL REPORT, 18th March; Vol. 513, col. 10] supplied the following information:

The numbers of students from Brunei, North Borneo and Sarawak attending Hong Kong University during 1952–53 are one, three and one respectively. The only candidates from these territories for admission in 1952–53 were four from Sarawak, of whom three were unsuccessful. By 27th March, 1953, three applications for 1953–54 had been received: two from Sarawak and one from North Borneo.
