HC Deb 02 April 1953 vol 513 cc185-6W
Lieut.-Commander Hutchison

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he has now considered the recommendations of the Philip Committee in regard to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland; and to make a statement on this subject.

Mr. J. Stuart

Yes. Her Majesty's Government are in general agreement with the Committee's recommendations, and they hope in due course to introduce a Bill to establish the new governing body which the Committee suggest. Additional temporary accommodation for the Museum, as recommended by the Committee, has been found in premises in Shandwick Place, Edinburgh, and the possibility of earmarking a site for a new permanent building, the erection of which the Committee did not contemplate as being possible for a considerable number of years, is being discussed with the Corporation of Edinburgh. I should like to take this opportunity of thanking Sheriff Philip and his colleagues for the most comprehensive and helpful Report which they have submitted.
