HC Deb 21 October 1952 vol 505 cc80-1W
56. Mr. Edward Davies

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government whether he is satisfied that local authorities have adequate powers to deal with the industrial smoke nuisance in their localities; and whether he will take steps to strengthen those powers to assist them in their fight for a clearer atmosphere.

Mr. H. Macmillan

Local authorities have wide powers for the prevention of smoke nuisances under the Public Health Act, 1936, and, while I am anxious to assist, I do not think that further legislation is necessary at present.

61. Mr. Pannell

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government whether he is aware of the nuisance inflicted on the residents of Benson Gardens, Leeds 12, by the day and night noise, smoke and fumes from the premises of the Yorkshire Engineering Services, Limited; and what steps he proposes to take, in co-operation with the Leeds City Council, to abate it.

Mr. H. Macmillan

I am making inquiries and will write to the hon. Member.
