HC Deb 21 October 1952 vol 505 c87W
86. Mrs. Mann

asked the Minister of Labour how many are unemployed in Lanarkshire due to shortage of scrap and shortage of steel; and how many industries are working below their potential capacity output for these reasons.

Mr. Watkinson

I have no knowledge of any persons wholly unemployed in Lanarkshire due to the shortage of scrap or steel but 60 men are temporarily idle on two days per week at steel rolling mills because of the shortage of steel ingots.

The metal manufacturing and metal using industries generally have been affected by the shortage of scrap and steel—a shortage which is now becoming less acute.
