HC Deb 18 November 1952 vol 507 cc156-7W
114. Mr. Albu

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works, as representing the Lord President of the Council, when it is proposed to complete the building and staffing of the Mechanical Engineering Research Laboratory at East Kilbride.

Mr. Molson

In present circumstances I am unable to forecast when the building and staffing of the Mechanical Engineering Research Laboratory at East Kilbride will be completed. Progress has been affected by the need for economies in capital expenditure. Nevertheless, site works, buildings completed and buildings now under construction will have cost about £1 million, and it is hoped shortly to start work on a further building costing about £400,000. In addition, temporary accommodation for one main block of work has been provided nearby at Thorntonhall.

The present authorised staff is 251, and it is proposed to make the necessary additions to the staff as further buildings are completed, subject to the requisite funds being available.
