HC Deb 14 May 1952 vol 500 cc119-20W
56. Mr. Foot

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty how far it is his policy to refuse applications for employment in the Royal Dockyards to persons who might have had past associations with the Communist Party; and what is the machinery by which he conducts this investigation.

Mr. J. P. L. Thomasthe

It is the policy of the Admiralty to refuse an applicant for employment in connection with work the nature of which is vital to the security of the State if he is a member of the Communist or the Fascist Party, or associated with either in such a way as to raise legitimate doubts about his loyalty. It would not be in the public interest to disclose the methods by which necessary inquiries are made.
